We’ve all been there: your New Year’s resolution was to get in better shape, or maybe you need to get your summer body ready. Perhaps it’s just time for a change. No matter what your reason is, you may not know where to start. We understand it's overwhelming to choose a gym which is why we will review The Edge Fitness along with three other popular gyms.
Being part of a gym can help push you to stay true to your resolution. For starters: you’re paying to be there, and it makes little sense to skip out on that. Plus… you can’t possibly fit an elliptical, treadmill, weight machine, a Zumba class, and your personal trainer in your living room, right? We will compare The Edge Fitness, LA Fitness, Anytime Fitness, and Crunch Fitness and discuss each of their key features, membership prices, cancellation policies, training, and other amenities to help you answer that looming question: Where do I start?
What Is Edge Fitness?
The Edge Fitness is a gym with locations in the northeastern section of the United States, in states such as Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. The Edge Fitness is widely popular because of its inexpensive membership prices and its available amenities. The Edge Fitness offers you a free guest pass so you can experience the facility before you join.
The Edge Fitness Features
The Edge is known for its flexibility in types of membership, the 24-hour access, its childcare facility, and you can even watch movies while you work out. Is there really a better way to make going to the gym more fun? The Edge Fitness also has various community partnerships, meaning you can get discounts at certain local restaurants and businesses.
The Edge Fitness Membership Pricing
At the Edge Fitness, there are three types of memberships: the basic one includes a few amenities such as 24-hour access at $10 per month; the average one includes a few more amenities such as tanning and massage at $20 per month; and the most exclusive membership at the Edge Fitness includes unlimited use of all amenities such as extra classes and guest privileges at $30 per month.
How Edge Fitness Compares
We picked a few similar gym clubs to see how they compare.
As mentioned, the Edge Fitness offers three types of memberships. For 24-hour access, unlimited full-fitness floor access, and a free fitness assessment, you can expect to pay about $10 per month. For that plus group fitness classes, access to all Edge Fitness locations, tanning and massage use, you can expect to pay about $20 per month. Finally, for all that plus spinning classes and preferred guest privileges, you can expect to pay about $30 per month.
The Edge Fitness is in cities throughout Connecticut. There are brand-new locations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. There is one location in Delaware.
Since the Edge Fitness is primarily based in the northeastern region of the United States, that means it’s not readily available to anybody outside these areas. However, these locations are very plentiful throughout Connecticut and its neighbor states, and expanding.
For these factors, we rate the Edge Fitness locations a 3 out of 5.
There isn’t a penalty for canceling, however, you must submit a 30-day written notice to cancel.
For this, we rate the cancellation policy 4 out of 5 for its flexibility, but also may be frustrating if you cancel in the beginning of a new billing period.
When you are a member at the Edge Fitness, you can work out on your own, join group workouts, or even hire a personal trainer. These are all dependent on what kind of membership you have, but it’s great to have these kinds of options. The Edge Fitness website has a list of personal trainers at each location. When you click on a trainer, it takes you to a short bio, what they are certified in, and how to contact them. There are also class schedules for group workouts, such as yoga, kickboxing, boot camp, or Zumba. There are class schedules and descriptions on the Edge Fitness website.
For its incredible variety, we rate the Edge Fitness training 5 out of 5 stars.
The Edge Fitness amenities include group exercise classes, personal training, a wide range of workout machines, a large turf with sprint lanes, access to any club, a women’s only area, a childcare facility (and they can exercise, too), a café for protein-filled drinks and snacks, a tanning and massage area, and self-service showers and locker rooms. We give the Edge Fitness amenities a 5 out of 5 stars.

LA Fitness is one of the nation’s most popular gyms because it has nearly 700 locations throughout 26 states and locations in Canada. LA Fitness offers great amenities hard to find anywhere else, like the ability to schedule your own spa treatments. LA Fitness also offers a free 5-day guest pass to familiarize yourself with the facility.
There are two types of memberships, and they both start with an initial fee of about $100. Then you can choose between single-club access for about $27 per month, or multi-club, single-state access for about $30 per month. This doesn’t allow for much flexibility and is rather pricey up front. It can discourage those who are just speculating committing to a gym membership. We rate the membership price at LA Fitness a 2 out of 5 stars.
LA Fitness has 690 locations across 26 states including Washington D.C. and Canada. We rate LA Fitness locations 4 out of 5 stars.
To cancel your membership at LA Fitness, you must fill out a cancellation form online. If you cancel at least 5 business days before your next billing date, then you will not be billed for another month; however, if it is less than 5 business days, you may be billed again. But what’s great is that LA Fitness is super understanding and will refund you. For this, we rate the cancellation process a 4 out of 5 stars.
Aside from a full gym floor, LA Fitness also offers personal training and group exercise classes. Group exercise classes include but are not limited to boot camp, water workouts, cycling, Zumba, and dancing. They post class schedules online. You can find your own personal trainer through their free health assessment.
LA Fitness has great amenities though they are limited. There is an array of workout equipment, spas and pools, saunas and various spa treatments. However, these are only available on certain dates and you must visit the website or ask your local LA Fitness. They also have courts for basketball, volleyball, or racquetball and you can even join your own club league. For this, we rate LA Fitness amenities 4 out of 5 stars, because though they are limited, they are high-quality.
Anytime Fitness is the fastest-growing fitness club in the world. Yes, you read that right: the entire world. Like the Edge Fitness, Anytime Fitness is open 24-hours, year-round. If you’re not ready to commit, Anytime Fitness lets you try them risk-free with a free 7-day pass.
You can try Anytime Fitness free for 7 days! After that, memberships start at about $30 per month, but price is subject to change depending on location and current promotions. You can also use any other location whether it’s on the other side of the country–or perhaps in another country. Membership prices depend on your location but it includes 24-hour access, all use of equipment, group classes, personal training, and tanning. For this, we rate the membership price 4 out of 5 stars.
There are over 3,000 locations in all 50 states and nearly 30 different countries, and averages about 300 new locations a year. We rate Anytime Fitness locations a 5 out of 5.
Anytime Fitness is a franchise operation, so it’s recommended that you contact your local Anytime Fitness gym owner in-person or via personal email to cancel. However, there have been several complaints about the cancellation policy. As expected, once you sign up for a contractual membership (the length depends on current promotions, if any), you are locked in until the contract is up. If you absolutely must cancel before then, most locations accept a 30-day notice, though there have been reports it is a long process. For this, we rate Anytime Fitness cancellation 2 out of 5 stars.
Much like the Edge Fitness and LA Fitness, Anytime Fitness offers unlimited use of the equipment, personal training and group exercise classes. Class schedules depend on location. We rate Anytime Fitness training 4 out of 5 stars.
Anytime Fitness does not have a pool, a court, or a spa—but that’s okay! You might be looking for something simple with a communal feel. Anytime Fitness has an array of cardio and weight machines and a designated room for classes. Anytime Fitness has showers and locker rooms on-site. You can also count on security and safety with your own fob to enter the building. It does not appear that Anytime Fitness has a guest policy, so your friends would have to be members, too.
The Crunch Fitness wants you to join the party with no judgments. At the Crunch Fitness, you can work out in a variety of ways, such as yoga, group classes, and use of equipment. The Crunch Fitness primarily focuses on bodybuilding and muscle toning with high-pace group classes and equipment, such as ellipticals, cycling, treadmills, and weights. The Crunch Fitness offers a free 1-day pass to try out the facility.
Like the Edge Fitness, Crunch Fitness offers three types of memberships. You can get a basic membership for about $10 a month. A peak membership for about $20 a month. Peak plus membership are about $25 a month. Annual fees are $9.75 and enrollment fees vary, depending on your location. We rate the membership pricing and fees a 4 out of 5 because it is fairly inexpensive.
Crunch Fitness has gyms in 21 states with over 145 locations for its regular gyms and 32 locations for its Crunch Signature gyms. We give Crunch Fitness locations 4 out of 5 stars.
Call or mail in your request to cancel your Crunch Fitness membership. However, Crunch Fitness requires that you’ve been a member for at least a year before you cancel. That means you are locked in to a 12-month contract. If you cancel before your contract is up, they require you to give a 30-day cancellation notice, and they will require you to pay an early termination fee of $25, plus $175. This is rather difficult and expensive, so we rate Crunch Fitness cancellation 2 out of 5 stars.
The Crunch Fitness has many group classes at each location, and it’s easy to find the schedule online at a specific location. You can also get a personal trainer though any additional fees are unclear. At the Crunch Signature locations, you can find more classes and state-of-the-art equipment.
The peak and peak plus memberships have the best amenities. The base membership gives you access to the workout floor, full locker room, Camp Crunch nutrition program, a half-hour circuit training, and a free t-shirt. The peak membership gives you the base amenities, plus access to group fitness classes and live Crunch video workouts. The peak plus membership gives you all these amenities, with access to Crunch Signature gyms, guest privileges, access to hydromassages, tanning, Crunch Camp small-group training. Each membership allows for a personal trainer as an add-on. We give Crunch Fitness amenities 4 out of 5 stars for its pricing and quality.
We looked at The Edge Fitness, LA Fitness, Anytime Fitness, and The Crunch Fitness. We researched each gym’s membership pricing, amenities, types of training, cancellation policy, and pros and cons. Now we must decide: which gym is the best gym? The winner of the best gym is The Edge Fitness gyms. The Edge Fitness comes in first place almost across the board. The Edge Fitness is inexpensive, open 24/7, and offers great amenities for the membership prices. The cancellation policy is also rather lenient—you must give them a 30-day heads-up. An appealing feature about the Edge fitness is that it’s family-friendly with its childcare center located right in the gym. The Edge Fitness understands that life can get in the way–but it still wants to make working out possible. You also can’t say no to discounts at your local business because of your membership with the Edge Fitness.
